About

Hi,

My name is Tom and I’m an enthusiast about just about anything that gives you more independence.  I believe in growing your own vegetables, raising chickens, making furniture and even trying to generate your own electricity.

Some people probably think this kind of life is a little bit eccentric, but really, it’s not.  Its about trying to be self-sufficient as much as you can be and protecting yourself from all the ups & downs of the modern world.

If you supply a good portion of your own energy in the form of solar or wind power, then it doesn’t matter to you all that much if the power companies raise their rates.  If you get the bulk of your food from your own garden, not only is it fresher and more rewarding to eat (after all, you grew it), it’s way cheaper than the produce section of any grocery store.

The same is true for chickens.  Of couse there are up-front costs… materials for building the chicken coop and buying your first chickens, but in the long run, it’s much cheaper, healthier and rewarding than buying chicken and eggs at the store.

Its not a lifestyle for everyone, of course.  Somebody across the street from Central Park in Manhattan would probably be cramped for space if they built a chicken coop in their tiny one bedroom apartment.

But if you’ve got the space and the inclination, then give it a try.  It’s work, like everything else in life that has value.  But it’s worth the effort and gives you a feeling of accomplishing something and doing something rewarding.

Take care,

Tom
